Terms of service
In effect from 2026-08-29
These are the terms you agree to by using Generation Recipes. They are meant to be readable. Where something is genuinely a limit on what you can expect from us, it is written as one rather than dressed up.
Who you are agreeing with
Generation Recipes is operated by Life Ascension LLC, a limited liability company registered in Idaho. Generation Recipes is a trading name of that company. In these terms, "we" means that company and "you" means you.
Your account
You need an account to keep recipes. Give us a real email address — it is how we confirm it is you and how you get back in if you forget your password. Keep your password to yourself; anything done from your account is treated as done by you.
You must be at least 13 years old.
Your recipes are yours
You own everything you put in. Nothing here transfers ownership of your recipes or your photographs to us.
You give us permission to store your content, process it as needed to run the service, and show it to the people you have chosen to show it to — the members of your household, and anyone holding a link you created. That permission exists only so the service can function, and ends when you delete the content or your account, except where a household has kept a copy of a recipe you shared with it, as described below.
We do not use your recipes to advertise to you, sell them, or publish them anywhere you have not chosen.
Recipes that are not yours to upload
A list of ingredients is generally not protected by copyright. The writing around it — the method, the headnote, the story about a grandmother — usually is, and belongs to whoever wrote it.
So: photograph your family's cards freely, and copy in recipes you were given. Do not paste in a copyrighted recipe from a book or a website and then share it publicly by link. You are responsible for what you upload, and if someone tells us you have posted their work without permission we may remove it.
Sharing
A share link makes one recipe readable by anyone who has the link, without an account. That is what it is for. Treat it as public: we cannot control where a link is forwarded. You can revoke a link at any time, which stops it working, but we cannot retrieve anything already read or copied.
When you leave a household, it keeps a copy of the recipes you had shared with it, credited to you. You keep your originals. This is deliberate — a family should not lose a recipe because someone left — and by sharing a recipe with a household you agree to it.
What you may not do
- Upload anything unlawful, or anything you do not have the right to upload.
- Use the service to store things that are not recipes.
- Attempt to access anyone else's account, recipes or photographs.
- Scrape, overload or attack the service, or work around its limits.
- Resell the service or pass it off as your own.
Card reading
When you ask us to read a recipe card, the photograph is sent to a third party whose software transcribes it. See the privacy policy for who and what is kept.
Transcription is frequently wrong in small ways and occasionally wrong in large ones. Check what it produced before you cook from it. We do not warrant that a reading is accurate, and quantities in particular deserve a second look.
What the service costs
Keeping recipes is free, and stays free. Unlimited recipes, unlimited photographs, kept for as long as you have an account, shared with your household and by link. We are not going to let you fill a box and then ask for money to keep it.
Reading recipe cards is the part that costs us money, so that is the part we charge for. Every account gets twenty card readings — once, not twenty a month. After that everything else works exactly as before and you can type recipes in yourself. Going over the limit never stops you saving a recipe or uploading a photograph, and never removes anything you already have.
Estimating nutrition on an imported recipe has its own allowance of twenty, also for the life of the account and separate from your card readings — spending one does not cost you the other. An estimate that arrives with a card you photographed is part of that reading and is not counted here. We only offer to estimate when the site you imported from published no nutrition of its own, and an estimate we could not make costs you nothing.
A subscription removes that limit. It is charged per household rather than per person, monthly or annually, and the current price is always shown before you pay. One subscription covers everyone in the household — if somebody you share a box with already subscribes, you have nothing to pay.
The consequence of that is worth saying plainly rather than leaving you to discover it: the subscription belongs to the person who bought it, not to the household. If they leave, the household's card reading stops and anyone else can subscribe. No recipe and no photograph is lost when that happens.
Paying, and stopping
Payments are handled by Stripe. Your card details go to them and never to us — we do not see or store a card number at any point.
A subscription renews automatically until you cancel it. You can cancel at any time from your profile page, which hands you to Stripe to do it. Cancelling stops the next renewal and nothing else: you keep unlimited card reading until the end of the period you have already paid for. We do not generally refund part of a period, but if something has gone wrong, write to us — the address is at the bottom of this page, and a person reads it.
Closing your account cancels your subscription straight away — not at the end of the period, the way cancelling from your profile does. There is no account left to keep access to, so the rest of the period goes with it, and there are no new charges for an account that no longer exists. If an invoice had already been issued and not yet paid when you closed, it covers a period you have already had and can still be collected — the same way cancelling does not refund part of a period.
If we change the price, we will tell you before the new price applies to you.
"Unlimited" means what a family would plausibly do with a recipe box. It is not an invitation to run a bulk transcription service through it. If usage is wildly out of step with that we will get in touch, rather than cut you off without warning.
Availability
We try to keep the service running and your recipes safe, and we take that second part seriously. But this is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. We do not promise it will be available without interruption, free of faults, or that data will never be lost.
Keep your own copy of anything you cannot bear to lose. Your profile page will produce a complete export — your recipes, your photographs at full resolution, and a page readable without us. We built it precisely so that trusting us is not your only option, and we would rather you used it than took our word for it.
Ending it
You can stop using the service whenever you like and ask us to close your account. Take an export first; account deletion is not reversible.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or that we are legally required to close. If we do that to you and it is not an emergency, we will tell you why and give you a chance to get your recipes out.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for loss of data, arising from your use of the service. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of the amount you have paid us in the previous twelve months or one hundred US dollars.
Nothing here limits liability for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you, we will say so on this page and update the date at the top before it takes effect. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the new version.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Idaho, United States, and any dispute will be heard there.
